What is the legal size allowed for a pocket knife in Kentucky?
I have two pocket knives. One that I know is legal, but the other one I’m not so sure.
Here’s the knife that I have. The Kershaw Storm
http://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-Storm-Serrated-Folding-1470ST/dp/B0013CK5GS/ref=sr_1_28?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1224783173&sr=8-28
The blade is three inches long and it is serrated, but I just want to make sure that it’s legal for me to carry and put it in jeans.
Kentucky has no legally mandated limit on the size of knives. Rather, it simply states that “ordinary pocket knives” are legal for carry.
What the heck is an “ordinary pocket knives?” Fair question.
It’s subjective and based on the opinion of the police officer who finds the knife and the court should one be on trial.
Based on a famous Kentucky case, White v. KY, butterfly knives, folding knives with huge impractical blades (7″ in the case of White) and one-handed tactical knives, are illegal. But other folding knives are not.
That Kershaw Storm looks like it would be ok, because 3″ isn’t huge, and serrations are for tool purposes (cutting leather, fish, soft wood, etc.). That is unless the local cops near you really hate knives.

There are literally thousands of knives being marketed all over the world. From standard kitchen knives to elaborate multi-functional tools to pocket knives to eye-catching daggers; you can find just about anything you want. Because every knife has its own purpose and usability, it is nearly impossible to own just one knife. The average collector can have anywhere from dozens to even hundreds of knives in his collection. Even non-collectors who purchase their knives for the purpose of using them can have drawers full of knives. Many knives are purchased for their specific use. Others are purchased for their uniqueness, or bizarre colors, or just because it looks intriguing even though they seemingly have no intended purpose. A good example of this is the Kershaw E.T. with built-in carabineer. (E.T. is external toggle locking system.)
The Kershaw E.T., Black Aluminum Handle, ComboEdge knife is 8 inches long with a 3 ¼ inch Sandvik stainless steel blade. The blade is half serrated and half plain edge. The knife is made of black aluminum and has a reversible pocket clip and built-in carabineer. The Kershaw E.T. even has a bottle opener. The Kershaw E.T. is designed to be opened or closed with one hand, either left or right. The Kershaw E.T. has a safety lock so that it cannot be closed or opened accidently. It does take some practice to learn how to open it correctly and safely as can be seen by the scars on the user’s hand in the following video. Click the link to see this knife in action.
The knife’s stainless steel blade enables it to retain a clean sharp edge. The black aluminum casing is durable yet at the same time lightweight.
While too big to be comfortably carried in your pocket, the reversible pocket clip makes it possible to carry your knife conveniently without the need to keep it in a toolbox. It is a safe, durable, and all around great knife to have in your collection or at your side.
